Missionary Letter for January, 2008

David A. Zuhars Jr. & Lee Ellen Zuhars

Dear Fellow Laborers in Christ,

“Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not: but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God”.  II Corinthians 4:1-2.

What an honor and privilege it is to be a God called preacher of the Word of God. It is at the same time a great responsibility committed to us by our Sovereign Lord. We pray the Lord help us in this great task and also to be faithful to teach only and fully what His Word teaches.

Brazil. We are back in the work of God full swing. We ask that you pray for us and the work here as we try and serve the Lord in Brazil. My wife got a real bad chest cold about a week ago and has coughed so much that her ribs are sore and hurt. I think she is getting better and should be back to normal in a few more days. She also has tendonitis in her wrists. She has to wear a reinforced hand brace to keep her wrists immobile and do physical therapy. She is getting better and should be alright in a couple of weeks. I am doing okay. Pray for her.

Brazil’s national disgrace is quickly coming upon us.  It is the annual holiday called the Carnaval. Fat Tuesday is the 5th of February. But their lasciviousness starts early and goes late. It is three to four days of wickedness that is a disgrace for any people. Sin and debauchery fills the streets and cities. Then on Wednesday, called Ash Wednesday, the day after Fat Tuesday, they put ashes on their foreheads as a sign of repentance. What hypocrisy! The Lord knows and sees and will bring all these things to remembrance on the judgment day. Oh how they need true repentance and faith in the Blessed Savior of sinners.

The First Baptist Church in the Garden of the Olive Trees.  The church here celebrated her 25th anniversary on the 16th of the month. We had special services from the 16th through the 20th with a dinner also. The theme of the meeting for this year was the doctrine of the New Testament Church. There were six sermons in all and each one dealt with a different aspect of the Lord’s church.  The subjects assigned and preachers were: the church as the body of Christ, Mardônio; the nature of the church, Romério; baptism, João Batista; the Lord’s Supper, Romualdo; the mission of the church, Rômulo and the need of the church, Dave Zuhars.  It was one of the best meetings that we have ever had.

The Work in Tapera, Ceará.  It was necessary to discipline Sister Isoda from the work there. The reason for the discipline was non attendance and the admission on her part that she was not going to attend anymore. The reason for this non attendance on her part is a very silly and unreasonable thing. Several visits were made by various people, including three by myself, to reason with her, and she refused and refuses to come back. Pray for her.

Ibicuitaba, Ceará. I have talked to Brother Antônio and his wife Sônia and they say that the same lost people are still coming to the services to hear the Word preached. We will make a trip down there next week, the Lord willing, after the carnival.  Pray for these lost people.

Tucuruí, Pará. The trip to Tucuruí was made as planned. The Lord blessed with a safe and fruitful trip. I left on the 4th and returned on the 7th. On the day of arrival, Friday, we had a meeting at night to discuss the work and their baptism. On Saturday night we had a preaching service and I preached on Justification from Job 9:2. On Sunday morning we had a preaching service also and I preached on Why I Am a Baptist. Then at 4 pm on Sunday afternoon we all went down to the Tocantins River and had prayer and then I baptized six brethren. Their names are Glailson, Girleno (Glailson´s brother), Nora (Glailson and Girleno´s mother), Luiz Haroldo, Everton and Márcio (Evertons brother). Then on Sunday night we had another preaching service and I preached on Salvation is a Work of God from Eternity to Eternity from Romans 8:28-30. They are having services weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays. Brother Glailson is doing the teaching in these services. Pray for these and the work of God there. Also we ask that you pray, if the Lord wills, to call out a preacher from among them. We pray that a New Testament Baptist Church will be established there.

“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men?  For if I yet pleased men, I should not the servant of Christ”.  Galatians 1:10.
